How to effectively promote faster and longer growth of African hair

For individuals of African descent, or those with a substantial African heritage, it is possible that hair growth may be a lengthy process and, in certain instances, hair could be susceptible to undesired breakage. Fortunately, there are several measures you can take to promote hair growth and maintain the health of your locks.

Doing laundry and administering remedies

1. Identify your hair type. You can rely on a salon employee or seek online advice to assist you in identifying the characteristics of your hair. This knowledge will enable you to make informed decisions when selecting suitable treatments and products. Here is a simplified overview:

– Type 2: Wavy hair – typically thin and manageable

– Type 3: Curly hair

– Type 4: Coily hair – often delicate and challenging to grow.

2. Only wash your hair when necessary. To retain its natural oils, avoid washing your hair too frequently. Experiment with washing it once a week, and if you notice your hair becoming brittle, extend the time between washes to once every two or three weeks.

– Additionally, search for a shampoo that doesn’t leave your hair feeling excessively dry.

– To minimize damage, wash your hair using lukewarm water and conclude with a cool water rinse.

3. Allow the hair to dry naturally. Using a blow-dryer can result in hair damage, causing it to break before reaching the desired length. To avoid this, you can opt to braid your hair, cover it with a silk scarf, and allow it to air dry overnight. Another option is to towel dry your hair by wrapping it in a towel and gently massaging your scalp for a few moments.

4. Make sure to use conditioner every time you wash. Shampoo removes the natural oils from your hair. Replenish these oils by using a conditioner that is suitable for African hair. Additionally, it is recommended to periodically provide deep conditioning to your hair.

To maintain moisture in between washes, consider using a leave-in conditioner.

5. Make sure to use hair oil on a daily basis. To ensure soft and supple hair and prevent it from breaking prematurely, apply natural oil to the middle and ends of your hair. Jamaican oil, castor oil, Moroccan oil, or lavender oil are all excellent choices.

Additionally, wrapping your hair with a satin scarf facilitates absorption of the oil.

6. Do not forget to moisturize. Using water can strengthen dry hair and potentially stimulate hair roots. To enhance moisture, you can choose to apply water, a moisturizing conditioner, or a mix of equal parts olive oil and coconut oil. For optimal hydration, apply each product in the mentioned sequence. The oil will assist in sealing the moisture.

In case you typically use gel or mousse for styling, consider using hair jam as an alternative. This will provide hold for your hair and eventually transform into oils, giving it a glossy and moisturized appearance.

7. Please take into consideration the conditioner. Using protein conditioners can enhance certain hair types but may be harmful to dry hair. To determine if your hair requires more protein, try brushing it: if your strands stretch considerably before breaking, additional protein may be necessary.

It is important to adhere to the recommended time stated on the label for leaving in protein conditioners, as exceeding this duration may cause them to become stiff and fragile.

8. When your scalp is dry, apply grease to it. To maintain a well-hydrated scalp, apply coconut grease to the tip of your pointer finger when it feels dry, approximately every other day. Gently distribute the grease from the top of your part and sweep it back until it is evenly applied.

However, if you observe any signs of dandruff, discontinue the use of oil as it may nourish the fungus responsible for it.

For individuals with a perm, it is advisable to grease once a week or substitute with hot oil application.

9. Please eliminate products using a neutralizing shampoo. To eliminate product buildup, incorporate a neutralizing shampoo into your routine. Cleanse your hair with this shampoo on a monthly basis to thoroughly remove all product residue. If you frequently use sprays, gels, or other styling products, consider using the neutralizing shampoo every other week.

Finding alternative methods to promote hair growth

1. Ensure you consume vitamins. By taking vitamin supplements, you can provide your hair with the necessary nutrients to enhance its growth and strength.

2. Make sure to consume an adequate amount of protein. Consume protein-rich foods such as avocado, pumpkin seeds, or gelatin.

3. Ensure that the ends of your hair are protected. To prevent hair breakage, avoid leaving your hair down. Instead, opt for hairstyles such as a bun or braids that keep your ends protected. Secure your hairstyle with bobby pins rather than elastic bands, as the latter can cause hair to be pulled out.

4. Cut the hair that is damaged. Regularly trim your hair, specifically the ends, either every two weeks or when split ends become noticeable. If your hair is in good condition, trimming 1-2 inches (2.5-5cm) every three or four months should suffice. While it may seem counterintuitive, trimming your hair actually promotes growth by preventing breakage caused by split ends.

5. Please refrain from mistreating your hair. Minimize the use of hair-dam practices such as blow, flat irons, over-tight braiding weaves, over-processing, dye, and perms to avoid harming and weakening your hair. Excessive use of these techniques can lead to damage and breakage, so it is best to use them sparingly.
